Q: What made you decide to release a music album?
It was inevitable, really. I’ve always loved poetry—it was my first love language. I’ve wanted to create something like this for years but didn’t have the means or the know-how back then. I’ve written and published two poetry books, and while I’m not performing on stage anymore—or at least haven’t in a long time—I still wanted a tangible way to share my art. This album felt like the next step, a way to reach beyond what my poetry books could.
Q: What inspired the album’s title, Velvet & Venom: The INK. Album?
The title came from the duality I’ve always carried in my writing—softness and bite, grace and grit. Velvet & Venom felt like the most accurate way to describe my voice as an artist. The INK. part ties it back to my poetry. Everything I create—books, songs, art—comes from that same place. The words are the constant. This album is just another way of letting them live and breathe, in sound instead of on a page.
Q: How did it feel hearing your words come to life in music for the first time?
It was surreal. I’ve lived with these words for years—on paper, in notebooks, spoken on stages—but hearing them wrapped in melody and rhythm hit differently. It felt like they finally had room to breathe. There’s something powerful about watching your own words transform, finding new life outside of you. It reminded me why I write in the first place—to connect, to feel, to heal. There are two in particular that made me cry for hours. The one I wrote for my mother and for my aunt. Both are passed on, and they would have loved this version of me.
Q: How do you want people to experience it—quietly, on a drive, through headphones, on stage?
Honestly, however it finds them. I didn’t make this album for a specific setting—I made it for a specific feeling. Some pieces hit harder when you’re alone in your car with the volume up; others sink in when you’re lying in bed with the lights off. It’s not background music. It’s meant to be felt. So wherever you are when it reaches you, let it.
Q: Is there another album coming? Or was this a one-time thing for you?
I don’t think it’s a one-time thing. This album opened something in me I didn’t even realize I’d closed off. I rediscovered my love for performance and the power of spoken word set to sound. I’m already writing again—some songs, some poems, some pieces that live in between. So yes, I think there’s more coming. Maybe not right away, but definitely not never.
Q: How do you balance being a CEO, author, poet, mother, wife, and still find time to create?
I won’t pretend I have it all figured out—balance is a moving target. Some days I’m thriving; other days I’m just showing up and hoping that’s enough. I work full-time in corporate America, run a publishing company, and still try to make space for my family and my art. What I’ve learned is that creativity doesn’t wait for free time. It shows up in the in-between moments—late nights, quiet mornings, car rides. I’ve stopped trying to separate all the versions of me. They coexist. That’s where the real magic happens.
